The Fate of a People is Tied to a Fly Rod

For decades, the native peoples of Guyana have struggled for economic independence. Poverty and illiteracy have forced many of the adults into a life of lawlessness and poaching while their children often flee the country to seek work in Brazil’s dangerous mines. But hope might be prowling in Guyana’s rivers in the form of the largest freshwater fish in the world, the Arapaima.

Follow three expert fishermen as they undertake a two-week voyage deep into the heart of Guyana’s rain forest. Their mission: to demonstrate that the arapaima can be caught with a fly rod. If they succeed, it will prove that the country’s fledgling sport fishing industry is viable. And that will mean a brighter future for the native peoples, the rain forest they call home – and the endangered arapaima itself.

Louisiana Kreutz is a documentary film maker working out of Austin, Texas, and her hometown of New York City. She has edited for director Bradley Beesley, most notably on 'Sweethearts of the Prison Rodeo', and directed several films of her own, including the upcoming 'Jungle Fish' for Costa Films. In all she does, whether documenting prison inmates ride bucking bulls or working on reality tv shows, she strives to create character-driven content. Though her full name is Louisiana (she was named for the purchase, not the state), most people call her Lucy.

Since starting with Costa as V.P. of Marketing, Al Perkinson has been the leader of Costa's initiative to establish itself as a socially responsible company. In 2007, Al started Costa Films as a way to blend fishing and adventure with conservation issues. Since conception, Costa Films has produced eight films including "Currents of Belize", "Wild Florida", and "Blue Highway". As the executive Producer of Costa Films, Al believes that, through this visual medium, he can inspire others to explore and find their passion. To understand that passion comes with the responsibility to protect those resources and ensure that they are healthy and available down the road. As an avid fly angler, Al has devoted much of his time to chasing permit, tarpon, and bones of the Caribbean Flats and skinny waters. He has traveled the world getting to know not only the fish, but the local inhabitants of these remote destinations and their unique perspectives on their interdependence with the living resources around them. His hope is that, through spreading his love of the chase, he can help these fish champion their own conservation through sport fishing.
