This video features Rick Russell, backcountry 4x4 trail expert, who shows you how to build a “new” 4x4 from all aftermarket parts. Includes tips, tricks & techniques

The first decision to make when building up a 4x4 is deciding how you're using it. In Rick's case he needs an extremely caplable off road vehicle which can also run freeway speeds in 100' temperatures or cross the mountains in a snow storm. After 28 years of modifications, he has a 1956 CJ-6 that met these requirements but it was time to do it again with coil suspension.

Over the years, auto manufacturers have produced more caplable vehicles while aftermarket companies worked to improve the on and off the road performance. In fact, the aftermarket companies have been so aggressive that several types of 4x4 vehicles con be completely build from aftermarket parts. And that is exactly what Rick did. This video documents the project.

The bobbed-tail aluminum scrambler body that Rick selected, sits on an Advance Frame Works frame. Currie Enterprises built out the Tera reverse-cut Dana 60 differentials and added their own suspension tricks to the TJ coil suspension. GM's Ramjet 350 crate motor pushes 400ft lbs of power through a 700r4 automatic transmission and Atlas II transfer case. Inside the cab, Hot Rod Air controls the climate. Autometer gauges monitor the rig and the CB radio is backed up by a ram radio. The accessory list includes Tuffy storage compartments, Premier Power Welder, PSC power steering ram, Beard seats, Warn winch, Arizona Speed & Marine computer and the list goes on.

The AJ-8 (aftermarket Jeep) was pre-assembled in the garage and assembled in Moab, Utah in 2 days with six guys. The action was captured on time-lapse and real time video. Regardless of whether you're building a 4x4 from all aftermarket parts or upgrading yours, this professionally edited video provide plenty of tips.
