In every strand, in every fiber, there is a story, a fairy tale, a truth, waiting to be unraveled

In a cottage in northern Scotland, Megan Boyd twirled bits of feather, fur, silver and gold into elaborate fishing flies -- at once miniature works of art and absolutely lethal. Wherever men and women cast their lines for the mighty Atlantic salmon, her name is whispered in mythic reverence, and stories about her surface and swirl like fairy tales

With breathtaking cinematography and expressive, hand painted animation, KISS THE WATER adheres to and escapes from traditional documentary form, spinning the facts and fictions of one woman life into a stunning film about craft, devotion, love, and its illusions.

Review by a valued customer Richard S.:

The DVD is a testimonial to the life of the traditional English spey fly tyer Megan Boyd (passed in 2001 at age 86).

It is set in Sutherland Area of the Highlands of Scotland. Scenes (North Sea beaches, village scenes, river scenes) of the cities Brora and Helmsdale. Some scenes from Inverness are shown (one hour drive from Brora). There are fishing sequences on the River Brora (fed by Loch Brora) and River Helmsdale (fed by Loch Achbamoine). Dunrobin Castle near the village of Golsdie (just north of Inverness) is also shown.

There are interviews with neighbors and friends of Megan Boyd - discussing her life; her eccentric ways; and her struggle with her failing eyesight at the end of her life.

The film intermixes traditional English spey fly tying (but not any specific complete sequence of tying any one pattern, a box showing all the types of patterns she tyed is remarkable - view it in slow motion - and reflect on the master craftsmanship), fishing sequences (but not beat specific), Megan Boyd's neighborhood, interviews of neighbors and friends, and artistic animation. The editing and mixing of all of these sequences is world class (hence all the accolades this film received in 2013).

If you prefer the current North West style of spey fishing (Scandi or Skagit spey casting, coupled with intruder and tube like flies), then this video is not for you.

There is an interesting discussion on modern fly tying materials (dyed genetic chicken feathers, animal hair) vs. traditional English spey materials (now outlawed to possess in US or lost to extinction - bird feathers).

There is a touching segment on HRH Prince Charles (who used her patterns from an early age until Megan had to stop due to failing eyesight). This is why there is historical footage of the marriage of HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana. It seems out of place in the film - until the whole back story is told at the end of the film.

This film (DVD) should be part of any Historical fly fishing film collection that includes: 1) A River Runs Through It (launched an industry in US); 2) Rivers of the Lost Coast (better days of Salmon and Steelhead fishing on US West Coast); and 3) The Lost World of Mr. Hardy (the history of Hardy).
